Ben Franklin’s Healthcare Investment Group (HIG) manages a portfolio of over 75 health sector investments that range from pre-seed stage to Series B/C stage. In addition, HIG makes 12-15 new investments each year, typically in pre-seed, seed, and Series A rounds. We support start-up founders who are bringing innovative technologies to market that focus on health and healthcare.

The Venture Capital Analyst, HIG position will work collaboratively with the HIG team to help source and review new investments, and support our existing portfolio companies. This is an opportunity to support work with healthcare innovation companies on a wide range of strategic topics across multiple subsector areas, including therapeutics, devices, and digital solutions. You will gain valuable experience in the role of venture capital and be able to have influence in health outcomes through seed-stage investing.

Additionally, the Venture Capital Analyst, HIG will help analyze information in the healthcare sector to support recommendations for investment decisions of larger amounts along with daily administrative support functions, in support of the Managing Director and other HIG team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the HIG team via a variety of investment, administrative, and pipeline development activities.
  • Support the assessment of portfolio companies’ performance and their development activities or milestone-base achievements.
  • Perform market research to help identify new investment trends and opportunities.
  • As part of Ben Franklin’s deal screening, attend calls and/or meet with prospects to evaluate opportunities.
    • Follow documentation protocols by summarizing call notes and enter company and investment information into Ben Franklin’s Salesforce CRM.
    • Under the guidance of the Managing Director and HIG’s Investment Director, gather information for due diligence, including talking with technical/business consultants to evaluate the target company’s technology, IP, regulatory and reimbursement paths, potential competitors, customers, and references.
    • Support valuation analysis via modeling, in coordination with Ben Franklin’s Finance Department team, to meet quarterly valuation deadlines and in support of audits.
  • Help to prepare internal investment memos for approval from the Ben Franklin Board of Directors.
  • Working with the tech investing group and finance teams, compile data into comprehensive reports for quarterly meetings of the Ben Franklin Board of Directors.
  • Network with peers in other venture capital firms and economic development agencies.
Requirements: 
  • Solid educational record, with graduate-level work desired, in a life sciences discipline ranging from molecular biology to biomedical engineering, in a strong academic program.
  • 2-3 years of technology assessment and commercialization assistance experiences such as with an accelerator, technology transfer office, or medtech company in-licensing business development.
  • Additional exposure to finance, out-licensing business development (such as technology transfer), or commercialization projects highly desirable, whether through job history, business honor society activities, prior externships, or degree program project work.
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize and communicate the results of reviews of technical/scientific background material succinctly and clearly.
  • Outstanding analytical skills, meticulous, initiative-taking, and possessing sound judgment.
    • Understanding of financial markets, research and development news, and investment trends.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data from various sources.
  • Understanding of and ability to assess peer-reviewed journal articles and data presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across teams in a highly dynamic environment.

Please note: This position will start in a hybrid work environment, with an office currently located in the Philadelphia Navy Yard (and expected to be relocated to the Center City area of Philadelphia in early 2025). All candidates are expected to be able to work in either location, and will need to be flexible around changing hybrid work requirements.
