The recession's ripple effect on nanotech April 12, 2010 - The impact of the recession that started in 2008 has been unavoidable in nearly every sector. While many industries have suffered, the financial crisis critically wounded two -- construction and automotive. For example, the U.S. recorded 54% less new construction starts in April 2009 compared to April 2008, and saw 18% fewer automobile sales in 2008 relative to 2007. While these two sectors dominate news cycles, the electronics industry also lost steam in 2008. For example, shipments of electronic equipment fell worldwide in Q4 2008 relative to Q4 2007 -- by 22% in Japan, 15% in China, 13% in Europe, and 3% in the US. More... Source: www.smalltimes.com |

EVSO: New Nanotechnology Breakthrough Could Drastically Reduce ... THE WOODLANDS, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Evolution Solar (PinkSheets:EVSO) applauded the news that Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have successfully coated paper with a solar cell, part of a suite of research projects aimed at energy breakthroughs. The paper solar cells are one of many avenues being pursued around nanoscale materials at the Eni-MIT Solar Frontiers Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This breakthrough could lead to layers of these materials essentially being sprayed using different manufacturing techniques to make a thin-film solar cell on a plastic, paper, or metal foils. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the solar industry and result in drastic solar cost reductions. … |

How world's smallest 'coffee ring' may help biosensors detect disease (PhysOrg.com) -- The field of biosensing has recently found an unlikely partner in the quest for increased sensitivity: coffee rings. The next time you spill your coffee on a table, look at the spot left after the liquid has evaporated, and you'll notice it has a darker ring around its perimeter that contains a much higher concentration of particles than the center. |
