Full Circle Investments LLC is raising a $30 million commercialization fund that will invest in young companies and technologies developed at a handful of research institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. … FCI Commercialization Fund I LP will focus on nanotechnology/microtechnology and information assurance, also known as cyber security. … Innovation Works and fellow state-funded economic development entities have been major supporters of early stage companies in recent years, readying them for venture capital infusions, but because of the economic downturn, the funding has been spread thin, pushing more capital into existing companies rather than backing new ones. Venture funding in nanotechnology may have peaked in 2008, when a record $1.4 billion was poured into startups tinkering with a variety of applications by manipulating matter at the smallest of scales.

But the author of a recent report said nanotechnology, which saw investment dollars fall 42 percent worldwide last year to $792 million, will benefit from an increased attention on health care and life sciences applications.
