EEB Hub Manager, Business Development

Reports To:
Vice President, Technology Commercialization Group – Physical Science

Summary:
The Energy Efficient Building Hub (EEB Hub) Manager, Business Development will support the Hub’s business development and commercialization services within the Greater Philadelphia region. The position will also drive certain tasks and subtasks within the EEB Hub project to completion. The EEB Hub Manager will be the point of contact for outreach and intake of clients for a full range of programs and services Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP), an EEB Hub Member, is providing under its DOE and EDA funded grants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works under the direction of the VP, Technology Commercialization and is the daily, primary interface among EEB Hub Members as a member of the Hub’s Task 6, Demonstration and Deployment team, charged with meeting its deliverables;
  • Works with Hub members, partners and affiliates to assess their capabilities and potential for collaboration, and identify new partnership opportunities;
  • Plays a lead role in managing the Hub’s RFP grant funding rounds for EEB devices, polices, and software.
  • The EEB Hub Manager, Business Development also provides:
    • Commercialization services in support of Hub Activities;
    • Business development and business plan development;
    • Assistance in identifying potential company partnership opportunities;
    • Access to funding sources, which includes introductions to venture capitalists, and Introductions to angel investors;
    • Assistance in preparing quarterly reports to the DOE and other funding agencies.
  • Works with BFTP/SEP personnel and regional partners to assist with:
    • Identifying technologies with commercial potential;
    • Providing IP assessment and technology transfer and licensing services;
    • Preparing technical and market assessment of early stage technologies;
    • Determining EEB technologies which merit the formation of a new companies.
  • Work with BFTP/SEP personnel to promote the commercial potential of Hub and other EEB associated IP and technologies, including, but not limited to: BFTP’s Technology Commercialization Group, Program Analysis and Development Group (PAD) and Investment Group (IG).

Key Skills & Qualification Requirements:

  • Experienced Business Development background with strong understanding of technologies associated with energy efficiency, construction building products and strong product management experience;
  • Experienced Business Development background with strong understanding of technologies associated with energy efficiency, construction building products and strong product management experience;
  • Industry experience, including line management in small to mid-size energy services companies or building related energy efficiency related device companies preferred experience, in energy services companies (ESCOs) and/or building related energy efficiency related device companies a plus;
  • Well networked with industry groups;
  • Bachelors Degree in a technology-related discipline with a proven track record commercialization of technology and business development services; Advanced degree preferred.

    Analytical:

    • Demonstrate time management skills for accomplishing diverse parallels activities;
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, meets deadlines, and adjusts quickly to meet emergencies;
    • Detail-oriented and works well under pressure;
    • Ability to carry out complex assignments independently; highly self-motivated.

This position is supported by a Department of Commerce, Economic Development award to BFTP/SEP as well as a Department of Energy sub-award from The Pennsylvania State University as Lead Institution for the EEB Hub and is subject to the availability of funds.

Incubator Manager, Project Liberty

Project Liberty is an effort among Philadelphia Media Network Inc. (PMN), the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA (BFTP), Dreamit Ventures and Drexel University. The Project Liberty Digital Incubator is designed to stimulate the establishment and growth of digital media startup companies in the Philadelphia region. The incubator, operated by BFTP, is hosted in PMN’s headquarters, parent company of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia SportsWeek and Philly.com.

The Project Liberty Digital Incubator Manager will be responsible for the management and administration of the Project Liberty Incubator, and will report to the Vice President Investment Group at BFTP and the Vice President External Relations at PMN. The Manager will interact with: (1) officers and employees of: BFTP, the Operator of the Incubator and PMN, the Host of the Incubator; (2) up to three developing technology companies selected as Incubator Participants; and (3) various other parties with whom the Incubator has relationships, including Drexel University and the Knight Foundation. This position requires administrative, managerial and interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage the day-to-day operations and budget of the Incubator and to develop and present reporting for the Incubator at all levels. This is not a full-time position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinate the arrival of co-op students and start-ups as they move into the Incubator space in Philadelphia Media Network Headquarters;
  • Assist co-op students and start-ups with computer set-up, internet access and any other technical issues as part of their on-site operations;
  • Address facilities issues as they arise, e.g., security badges, parking, furniture needs, space, conference rooms, etc.;
  • Manage the entry and flow of personnel, guests in and out of the Incubator area;
  • Coordinate any speaker series/events for the Incubator participants, inclusive of co-op students and start-up company employees;
  • Provide administrative support, order supplies, snacks or other items requested by Incubator occupants;
  • Provide agreed upon updates to the Operator and Host of the Incubator on status of Incubator operations, requested support, needs and progress; Provide detailed Progress Reports on the operation of the Incubator and the completion of accurate assessments of activities in the Incubator satisfactory to the Incubator operator, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA;
  • Budget Administration;
  • Reporting as required;
  • The flexibility to perform other assignments which may arise as the Incubator grows and develops.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Results driven team player; Bachelor’s Degree preferred;
  • Ability to comfortably work in fast-paced environment;
  • Must be able to multitask on deadline;
  • Ability to proactively identify upcoming risks, issues and bottlenecks;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required;
  • Superb written and verbal communications skills;
  • Excellent presentation skills and attention to detail;
  • Good negotiation skills;
  • Some budgeting experience necessary;
  • Advanced MS Excel and MS Word skills;
  • Quantitative and analytical skills;
  • Ability to interact with wide range of clients, all levels of staff and senior management within company;
  • Supervisory experience required, print and digital media preferred;
  • Any experience working with government grants, technology or non-profit organizations a plus.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Up to six (6) full-time co-op students.

Key Program Manager, Scientific Engineering and Technical Services

Reports To:
Vice President Technology Commercialization Group

Summary:
Performs day-to-day management of overall contract support operations, possibly involving multiple projects and groups of personnel at multiple locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organizes, directs and coordinates the planning and production of all contract support activities;
  • Lead projects that involve the successful management of teams composed of engineers, scientists, and management professionals who have been involved in analyzing, designing, developing, integrating, training, testing, documenting, implementing, and maintaining complex systems;
  • Identifies enhanced / new services and programs that will fulfill unmet needs, based on interactions with companies and academia.

Other Skills and Qualifications Requirements:

    Technical:

    • Ability to use personal computer or similar hardware. Strong skills in Microsoft Operating Systems or similar software, and able to access computer networks;
    • Ability to prioritize and manage the production of work so overall quality and quantity of work meets or exceed the organization’s requirement and objectives.

    Analytical:

    • Possess a high degree of discretion, experience, confidentiality and good judgment in decision-making process;
    • Take initiative and work independently, seeking direction where appropriate;

Other Qualifications:

  • MS and /or M.A. Preferable degree in scientific and/or engineering;

  • Ability to work independently adheres to prescribed procedures, work extra hours as needed, and maintain confidentiality;
  • Willing to assist others, team player, conscientious, responsible, and hardworking.
