Overview
BFTP/SEP has a strong track record of providing early-stage financing and entrepreneurial guidance to promising life sciences ventures across a span of technologies including: biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics, biomaterials, and healthcare IT.
We have funded many of southeastern Pennsylvania's leading life science companies, including Centocor (NYSE: JNJ), Cephalon (Nasdaq: CEPH), Adolor (Nasdaq: ADLR), ViroPharma (Nasdaq: VPHM), Orthovita (Nasdaq: VITA), Genaera Corporation (Nasdaq: GENR), Immunicon (Nasdaq: IMMC), Ecton (acquired by Siemens), Annovis (acquired by Transgenomic), BioSyn (acquired by Cellegy Pharmaceuticals), and Morphotek.
As BFTP/SEP seeks to invest in only the most promising early stage life sciences companies, funding is extremely competitive. Most of the companies successful in raising BFTP/SEP funding possess the following characteristics:
  • Venture experienced business management
  • Strong IP and patent protection
  • Novel and unique science
  • Sound business and scientific approach
  • Leveraged sources of capital (SBIR, Angel, Early Stage Venture Capital, other state funding sources)
  • Ability to achieve a significant milestone with BFTP/SEP dollars
  • Long term sustainability and job creation
Investment Levels
BFTP/SEP invests $100,000 - $500,000 as part of larger funding rounds of $200,000 - $3,000,000 involving other sources such as SBIR, Angel, Early Stage Venture Capital, and other state funding sources.
It is expected that companies funded by the Biotechnology and Life Sciences Investment vertical will achieve a significant commercial and/or technical milestone that attracts additional outside investors (Angel, Venture Capital, Government Funds), strategic partners, and/or will generate revenue.
Terms
BFTP/SEP's standard investment terms for Life Science companies include:
  • Convertible Debt
  • Warrant
