Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s New Industry Cluster Analysis Resource shows Regional Growth in Life Sciences, Defense and Security

September 14, 2012

PHILADELPHIA, PA (www.sep.benfranklin.org) – Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) created the online Southeastern Pennsylvania Industry Cluster Analysis Resource to demonstrate how the five-county southeastern Pennsylvania region (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia) and the greater Philadelphia metro area are performing across various industry and occupation clusters.

“Our new Industry Cluster Analysis Resource is a tool for economic development professionals, public officials and others to analyze regional strengths and opportunities,”

said RoseAnn B. Rosenthal, Ben Franklin’s President & CEO.

The Resource shows that from 2007 to 2010 the number of Life Sciences companies in southeastern PA grew from 4751 to 5019.  In 2010, the proportion of companies in Life Sciences was well above the national average, exceeding the traditionally innovative areas of greater Boston, greater New York City and greater Chicago.

Employment in the Defense and Security sector in the Philadelphia/Camden/Wilmington Metro area grew from 135,788 employees in 2007, to 141,662 employees in 2010, comparable to the Boston/Cambridge/Quincy Metro area.
The Resource has regional information and links to over 90 interactive charts, which show industry establishment, industry employment, industry wages, occupation employment and wage data.  In addition to data on the five counties, the Resource has interactive charts that compare the Philadelphia/Camden/Wilmington Metro area to other regions, including the Boston, Chicago and Pittsburgh Metro areas.

The data is taken from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau and Innovation in American Regions.  The interactive charts include data on Location Quotient (LQ), which show the concentration of an attribute, such as wages in an industry for a region, in comparison to the national average concentration for that attribute.
